Better Breed Cameroon hereby announces that it is now accepting entries for the 6th edition of the annual Sama Randy Youth Write Contest. This essay competition named in memory of pioneer Better Breed member Sama Randy challenges undergraduate students of all higher institutions in Cameroon to reflect and write essays on specific themes, in a bid to encourage critical consciousness in Cameroonian youth, incite them to engage in social change discourse, and foster the spirit of writing as activism. Under the theme “Unsung, Overlooked, Forgotten, & Undervalued”, this edition of the contest calls upon participants to uncover unrecognized and undervalued Cameroonian nation builders, tell the untold stories of those figures we all should know more about but might not, and celebrate unsung (s)heroes. This theme is a nod at the work of activist Andre Blaise Essama, renowned for advocating the respect of national heroes and the replacement of the monuments of colonial figures with those of such heroes. It is also a challenge to young Cameroonians to do investigative work, make new discoveries about our own people and familiarize themselves with our stories, which are too often distorted and used against us. As always, the competition is open to undergraduate students nationwide (including those in diploma
programs) and requires essay responses to be a minimum of 1,000 words (roughly two pages) and a
maximum of 1,500 words in English. Essays should be submitted to Better Breed Cameroon as attachments via email to: The subject line of the email should read: ‘2020 Sama Randy Youth Write Contest Submission’ and the body of the email has to specify the participant’s name, contact number, age, degree program, and the name of their school. Better Breed Cameroon is once again offering three cash awards of CFAF 100,000, 75,000, and 50,000 to the first, second and third prize winners respectively. All submissions will be graded based on content, presentation of arguments, spelling, grammar, and compliance with rules of submission. This call for entries closes on 29 February 2020. Winners will be contacted within three weeks from the deadline and awarded soon after. 2… Must they be alive, or dead?

Apologies for our delayed response Nelson. Heroes can be anyone irrespective of what field they are in or whether they are dead or still living. Anyone at all who you feel Cameroonians, in general, should know more about and acknowledge for their contribution to nation-building.
